Beachside Scam Leaves German Tourist Devastated

A German national who is presently in Brazil reported losing €4000 after unknowingly inserting their PIN into two counterfeit card machines. The theft happened on a beach, where the victim was tricked into approving two distinct payments — one of €2300 and another of €1800 — in five minutes.

Bank Denies Refund Due to PIN Authorization

Even though the fraud was reported within 90 minutes and a police report was filed with Brazilian authorities, the person’s German bank has been unwilling to issue a refund or request a chargeback. The bank claims that since the payments were authenticated with a PIN, they bear no responsibility for the loss.

The victim wonders if the bank owed a responsibility to report the unusually large and out-of-character transactions as suspicious. In the absence of any previous similar activity, the high-speed back-to-back large-value charges seem to have escaped fraud detection mechanisms.

Experts Urge Caution When Traveling

Consumer protection groups warn travelers to exercise care with unfamiliar card terminals and to take into account daily transaction limits. Legal professionals recommend seeking advice from a financial ombudsman or attorney for any possible recourse in these situations.
