Vehicle scam

Vehicle scam

Buying a car online has never been easier. From price comparisons to the financing process, the automotive purchase process has changed because of the Internet. However, with buying vehicles becoming easier comes the increasing risk of being scammed when you buy a vehicle. Here at Lycan Retrieve, we assist victims with knowing how to look for the warning signs and what to do if they have been scammed.

How Do These Scams Work?

Scammers often list vehicles at very low prices to catch your eye. They will often have a story about needing to sell quickly due to a hardship in their life or will say they are selling for a family member or acquaintance. They will also try to tell you that the price includes delivery to make the offer seem more legitimate.

Most scams also involve scammers trying to pressure you into moving the conversation off of the platform (like Auto Trader or eBay) so you can make a direct payment. Doing this way there is no buyer protection for you when making a significant investment like a vehicle.

Staying Safe

Even if a scammer agrees to a test drive, the car could potentially still be stolen. Some sophisticated fraudsters use forged documents and stolen identities to narrow the scope of the sale. Other scams provide fake tracking numbers for vehicles or parts that never exist.

If the seller keeps stressing that you have to hurry or if they ask for non-standard payment in a non-standard way (like crypto or wire transfers), if they suggest a third-party escrow service, proceed with caution.

There are also some key red flags:

  • If the price is too good to be true.
  • If the seller insists on “off-platform” communication.
  • If it is not complete paperwork or there is no service history.
  • If they ask for upfront deposits or international transfers.
  • If they promise delivery only and nothing else.
  • If they use urgency tactics like; “Act now!” or “Limited offer!”

If you have been a victim of a vehicle scam, you may consider seeking out the help of a company like Lycan Retrieve and have them evaluate your case and direct you to recovery for funds where applicable. Be cautious, and if you ever are not sure, don’t do it.
