Southwest Credit scam

Southwest Credit scam

The text has cause for concern

Several people are speaking out after receiving unexpected text messages from a company called Southwest Credit, saying they owe money on accounts they did not open. One such instance includes the consumer receiving a message indicating that they owe $194 on a Comcast account. The message offered a “settlement” of $94 if paid promptly.

Is Southwest Credit Legitimate?

Southwest Credit is a genuine debt collection company. But scammers tend to masquerade as real companies to get people to pay money for debts that do not exist. The reason this case is suspect is the fact that the recipient purportedly never had a Comcast account, thus prompting suspicions about the validity of the claim.

Experts Advise Caution

Consumer protection analysts advise against calling the number on unsolicited messages. Rather, the company can be contacted directly from its authentic website or an authentic customer care line. In addition, one is advised to review their credit report and be alert for symptoms of identity theft.

What Should You Do?

Do not give out any personal information if you get a similar message. Also, report the situation to your local consumer protection agency and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).Bottom of Form
