Online Job Scams Progressing with Persuasive Strategies

April 14, 2025 – Online Safety Desk

A job applicant has been concerned about a supposedly scam job opportunity that requires a credit score report before going for an interview. The candidate, having recently applied for remote work, was sent an email by a company known as “Bekafor” declaring the recipient was chosen as a shortlisted candidate for a Remote Data Entry Technician.

Credit Score Requirement Triggers Red Flags

The message indicated that all new candidates were made to submit their credit score due to company access to credit cards. Yet the ask preceded an interview and instructed the applicant to click on a link to get the report—alarm bells ringing. The message also omitted a manager’s name, a rare thing in business correspondence.

Email Appears Legitimate—but Is It?

What made the email so persuasive was the presentation of a sending address from “mail@hire.lever.co,” a valid recruitment website. Nevertheless, the candidate identified significant differences from former legitimate experiences: in former careers, credit checks followed in-person interviews via verifiable services.

A Call to Awareness

The user sensibly avoided clicking the link and posted her account to advise others. Job scams against vulnerable adults continue to be among the most manipulative—and destructive—online risks today.
